The Sierra Club’s Lower Eastern Shore Group, in partnership with the Maryland Legislative Coalition, is presenting its 2nd Annual Eastern Shore Environmental Legislative Summit virtually this coming weekend, January 9th and 10th , from 2:00 until 4:00 on both days. Although this is an Eastern Shore Summit, most of the legislation being discussed is applicable to the whole state.
Saturday will feature 11 legislators who are going to discuss the environmental bills they are sponsoring. This includes Delegates Lewis, Lierman, Elfreth, Boyce, Wells, Stewart, Charkoudian, Stein, and Hartman. Senators include Kagan and Elfreth.
Sunday will feature representatives from various NGOs such as the Sierra Club, Maryland Campaign for Environmental Rights, Center for Progressive Reform, Climate X-Change, Shore Rivers, Wicomico Environmental Trust, the Maryland League of Conservation Voters, MarylandPIRG, Concerned Citizens Against Industrial CAFOs, and the Chesapeake Climate Action Network.
NGO speakers will discuss their organizations’ legislative priorities.
Some of the topics to be covered by legislators and NGO representatives will be stormwater adaptation, public water access and equity, the paint stewardship program, protections for agricultural workers, zero waste bills such as the Plastic Bag Reduction Act and the Prohibition on Releasing a Balloon into the Atmosphere bill, various climate bills, and more.
We hope you can join us for this environmental legislative preview for the 2021 Maryland General Assembly session. Please remember to register for both days.
